In response, EKS Audi Sport brings a significantly updated Audi S1 to the start-line this season with 2016 World Champion Mattias Ekstrom demonstrating his renewed commitment by retiring from DTM in favour of a fully-focused World RX tilt. He is joined by new signing Andreas Bakkerud, the highest-profile mover over the winter having jumped ship from the departed Hoonigan Racing Division Ford team.
Growing up in the rallycross paddock — not having richest parents and not having a silver spoon in my mouth — this was my boyhood dream,” says Bakkerud. “I love being on this adventure.” In addition to driving, Bakkerud is also a licensed mechanic — having completed his certification with a work placement on fellow countryman Petter Solberg’s team.
He says the experience gave him a greater appreciation of the group effort that makes a race team successful. “I know more and more that we win and loose as a team,” he says.
